Trust Your Guts! How to choose Colours Without Second-Guessing Yourself 💪🎨

Ever walked into a paint store, filled with excitement, only to leave feeling overwhelmed and unsure?

You’re not alone. Choosing colours for your home can feel like a huge decision—after all, we’re told that colours affect mood, light, and even the way a space feels. With so many options available, it’s easy to get stuck in analysis paralysis, doubting whether you’re making the right choice. But here’s the thing—your instincts already know what feels right. The key is learning to trust them.

Your home should be a reflection of you, not a rulebook dictated by trends or expectations. Let’s break down how you can tap into your natural instincts and choose colours with confidence, without overthinking every little detail.

1. Ditch the Fear of ‘Getting It Wrong’

Many people hesitate to use colour because they’re afraid of making a mistake. But what if you couldn’t get it wrong?

Think about it—your home is a deeply personal space, not a showroom. There are no absolute right or wrong choices, only choices that feel right for you.

We’ve all seen those magazine-perfect homes with neutral, minimalist palettes, but if that doesn’t bring you joy, why force it? If a rich mustard yellow makes you smile, or a deep emerald green makes you feel calm, that’s your answer.

Reframe the way you think about colour: Instead of seeing it as a potential mistake, see it as a chance to express who you are.

Pro Tip: Start in a space that feels less intimidating. A bathroom, hallway, or even a painted door edge can be a great low-risk place to introduce a colour you love.

2. Pay Attention to What Draws You In

Your instincts are already guiding you—you just need to listen.

Start noticing the colours you naturally gravitate towards in everyday life:

- Your Wardrobe: What colours do you wear the most? If you’re constantly drawn to warm, earthy tones in clothing, there’s a good chance you’ll feel at home surrounded by similar hues in your space.

- Your Pinterest & Instagram Saves: Scroll through your saved interiors—what’s the common theme? Are you pinning moody, jewel-toned rooms? Or soft, pastel-hued spaces? Your preferences are already there.

- Your Travel & Nature Preferences: Are you drawn to tropical blues and lush greens? Or do you find peace in sandy, neutral tones? Often, the environments we love can be a clue to the colours we’ll enjoy at home.

Once you start noticing patterns, choosing colours will feel much more intuitive.

3. Let Your Emotions Guide You

Colour isn’t just about aesthetics—it’s about how it makes you feel. Every colour carries a certain mood and bring out a specific behaviour from people using the space. Think about what kind of atmosphere you want to create and how you want to behave. Do you crave a cosy, cocooning space? Deep, warm tones might be your answer. Want something fresh and uplifting? Lighter, vibrant shades could be the way to go. Trust the emotional connection you have with colours.

Instead of stressing about what’s trendy, ask yourself:

- How do I want to feel in this room? Which activities will take place?

- Do I need a space that feels bright and energetic, or cosy and cocooning?

- When I step into this room, what mood do I want it to evoke? what behaviour should I have?

Your gut feelings are more important than any colour trend. Trust them.

4. Test and Observe

If you’re hesitant, start small and simple.

- Pick up paint samples and apply them to different walls in your space.

- Never completely rely on a small paint swatch! Test colours in different lighting conditions. Paint large samples on walls or use peel-and-stick options. Look at them in daylight, evening light, and artificial lighting to see how they shift.

- Use temporary décor like cushions, artwork, rugs or flowers in your chosen colours before committing to paint.

Colour is never set in stone—you can always tweak and refine as you go. Give yourself permission to experiment.

Pro Tip: I like to use a wireless dimmable LED Wall Lamp that I can carry around and also change the temperature, to light up a paint sample I painted on a wall.

5. Don’t Overcomplicate It

The more you overthink, the harder it becomes to decide. One of the biggest mistakes people make is overanalysing every little detail—comparing 15 shades of blue, debating whether a hue is "too bold," or waiting for the “perfect” choice to magically appear.

Instead, go with what excites you —like a magpie 😜

- If a colour makes you feel something, that’s a good sign.

- If you’re unsure between two shades, choose the one that sparks the most joy.

Your home should bring you happiness, not stress.

6. Be Inspired, Not Influenced

Trends can be inspiring, but they shouldn’t dictate your choices.

One of the biggest confidence killers is looking at what everyone else is doing and thinking, “Maybe I should do that too.”

While it’s great to draw inspiration from magazines, Instagram, and Pinterest, your home should feel like you—not just a replica of someone else’s.

If you love deep, moody walls but everyone around you is painting their homes white, who cares? If bright yellow makes you smile, go for it.

The best interiors aren’t the ones that follow trends—they’re the ones that tell a story.

7. Your Home, Your Story

At the end of the day, your home should be a reflection of YOU. Each colour choice adds to your personal story—so trust your instincts, embrace your unique style, and create a home that makes you happy every single day.

Just as musicians cultivate an ear for melody and harmony over time, you’ll develop your own ‘eye’ for colour as you experiment. Trust your intuition—don’t worry if a pairing feels jarring or unconventional. Let that dissonance become part of the experience, and over time, you’ll find yourself relying on your own internal sense of what feels right.

Trust your guts

💡 A simple exercise to build confidence:

- Walk around your home and find one object you absolutely love—whether it’s a cushion, a vase, or a piece of artwork.

- Look at the colours in it—do they spark joy?

- Now imagine incorporating that colour into your walls or furniture. See? You already know what feels right.

Are you ready to let go of doubt and embrace colour with confidence? Start small, trust your gut, and watch your home transform into a space that feels truly yours!
